breakfast before breaking camp
breakfast before breaking camp

breakfast before breaking camp
the sun had burned a while yet
when the sound of thunder shook our rest
and camp mates in quickness glanced
the booming roll the hot heavy air
where once was peace we left only care
how could we explain our strangeness there
the logs and matters that we had writ
could only take a small moment now
now now now still i wonder how
if we were strangers in so strange a land
could not a smile gift a helping hand
but no no hardly so so we left to go
i tell you between my furtive steps
i have only this pack and hurriedness
so walking faster come learn from me
the path i trace is a greater fact
then dawn or night or half moon’s light
or even what you thought you knew
for friends as make we even yet
friends until parting step
we away we can not stay
where dust clinging came to rest
is a memory in the past
but the rains with this storm will rise
the dust uneasy sits
what powers of nature shape
to mold to build to make new
