that here was the deal
here was a time
bargaining for substance
dabbled like bristles
that drying left a vanished trail
across the weft of gessoed canvas
for a might for a right
for the splayed wood upright
that held the frame
while milling milling the guests
murmured of affronts to art
what they mistook what they overlooked
was it was more than art
even more than life
