disparate stroll along rue de belleville
by tanner brockwell
disparate stroll along rue de belleville
the cutting cold of pre-eve not eve
but the damned tempt
with locks tossed and so unkempt
it had been an hour since midnight
past bedtime and slumber
past the wishes seen
to slip into the silent dream
tossed from reveries
sharp shrills in the so sharp chill
to place beneath the green boughs
in the small lit welcoming
two wrappings two gifts
for these hands for these lips
full of melancholy
the gas lit streets eerie beneath the spans
archaic the very day was built
anachronism and totemism
for the mettle for the shout
and raised like unholy roots
held aloft and nailed to the sky
