mercurial
by tanner brockwell
mercurial
resplendent
headlong for dash
and chance was new
there over the horizon
over the dance
of the teaming throngs
if they only knew
antagonist
so judged for some
that after all
there amongst
the very old and very young
some were tricky
some naive
they saw past the glow
past the certainties
there were feathers
there was the scent of dew
there in passage
burning bright
brighter than ever true
this storied arc
this forgotten foe
this memory of once
when in the afterglow
sunset caged upon a tableau right
and goddess dressed in clouds left
this orbit then
this subtle finery
that drifted away
leaving the dance
be specked with fiery lights
that held for a moment and turned
into the dance once more
