pearl from the darkest waves

pearl from the darkest waves
by tanner brockwell
pearl from the darkest waves
and hands that reached amongst the silt
diving in the cool dark waters
and finding the ridged flare of shellgripped hard and lifting
carried in the lung tight burning rise
of the water cold upon the skin
and cresting shouting ho above the wavesand lifted the marine relic high
seaweed and sand clinging tight
inside inside the unknown sight
the darkest orb in this then darkest nightkept to hand to hand and climb into the skiff
oars and hands strongly gripped this find
this rough dull shell that inside hid a treasure new
this was a journey to the heart this was a journey darkthat braves the waves and threat of storm
cold winds blew now upon the deep
and roiling like a kettle thick
this surface shades of black to steepand night and waves are constant now
they lull the incurious or fevered brow
and all the while the stars are hid
and only haze of luna’s lid
