petals as they lay

petals as they lay
by tanner brockwell

petals as they lay
the dried once tender
muted now though once they shone
are crisp and delicate
the tracing of ridges
minuscule but there
there is the hint of fragrance
that would fill the air
the petals were a bud once
that in a day or two
blossomed and bloomed
the smallest too
and for a tiny season they were new
there is a box hidden away
where these petals rest today
and they are memories now
they are past and gone
