stark beauty in the cold wastes
by tanner brockwell (cc) 2007
stark beauty in the cold wastes
could taste the time frozen and waiting
and what was it we waited for
before society grinned
what had you to put in
a stage a throne or all alone
what the withering wind has swept
because we had barely begun
a strange slate naked shown
welcome to a friend
because what we had never would end
quizzical was never enough
never enough
for a gentle hand
gentle
could you make it in a day
could you now
leaving was easier
than that final arrival
for the destination
was so distant
pulling maps from shelves
you’d think landmarks would stay
but their impermanence was illusory
landscapes and highstakes
how high was enough
climbing the mountain
before the dawn
so arriving would see
clouds that kissed a radiant orb
shining like there was no tomorrow
no yesterday
