the boughs of the free

10:44 in poems by Tanner

the boughs of the free
by tanner brockwell

the boughs of the free
waving so to see
the seedlings entwined
years thirty and a three
ages so to be
the caress of darkening bark
planted in shallow beds
germination pure and serene
the leaves toward the sun would grow
the leaves with the wild wind would blow
and as the secret seedlings caught
the hold of loam and airy naught
for interspersion of the moist summer rains
that flitting as drops be-specked the verdant leaves
so near so near the horizon gleams
and spreads the arch of colored hues
that hints of treasures and the true
a golden time spent with a golden you
