the scent of aged knowledge
by tanner brockwell

the scent of aged knowledge
the pages rough
bindings firm
had the gilding rubbed
so the author was faint
the title a favorite
nudged into view
in the shadows
the shelf was bowed
so many pages
so many tomes
timorous brass at the door
the glass cloudy set
had a welcome sign
the shelves in rows receding towards
the back of the room
there the doorway showed
a little alcove
and then another door
and then
into a large cavern
the older books were here
periodicals
collections that were far from the front
like the stragglers
in a moving column
urged to keep up the pace was slow
and they marched on still
how odd though
that the weighty sky
sounded distant
