i woke with voices
by tanner brockwell

i woke with voices
the murmured thus of the waking thrush
and knew that the hour was short before
the evening star gone from view
vanished like the rising dew
that a throaty hush of the thirsty thrush
would quench before e’re he would sing
that creaking sigh of porch swing sway
oh it’s going to be an early day
and he was joined by the tilting lilt
a stones throw or skip upon the pond
where rings were made by dragonflies
that soared so low they touched the surface
a quizzical way to start the day
that early morn in sun rays drenched
soft folds of the glory in morning unfold
and light as rays upon the ways
that glistened with a drop or two
the mornings way in drops of dew
that freshen everywhere they fall
and slipping from the petals roll
in to the deepest silken fold
and morn is rose with audience
a daring after chance
that I’d roll in my way out of the bed
inspired by this great event
that carried on while I dreamed
or so it seemed
that nights embrace with soft touch
would wake me now with the softest brush
as she too rises to go
there is laughter in this show
that audience that majesty
for each is one for each to see

step past
by tanner brockwell

step past
the rustle
turn
bustling
turn
steps across parchment
enrichment
the evening rise
‘crossed starry sky
past steps
elevated
elated
simply stated
pleased and too
morning chases
vanished dew
