toes sifting through dry silt

toes sifting through dry silt
by tanner brockwell

toes sifting through dry silt
on the lake bed
millennial memory
sometimes the rain comes
and winds and sun beat the dirt hard
underfoot under the sky
or if the water is late
the silty dust swirls around
like minute particles of sand
chalky the taste
eyes wrapped against the sharp wind
that cuts through everything
blow you down
blows right through
cooker today
tonight i’ll pull the covers over
cold and loud
the dreams are punctuated by
carnival on overload
this isn’t what it seems
this is not even a dream
waking with the sun
blue sky and the cup ridge hills
that long til now
that now and now is then
